A Saree Shop Advertisement

I happened to see this banner advertisement outside a saree shop. Cutting all the artistic(!!!!!!!????????!!!!!) details that I do not want to explicitly lay out for you to imagine, I'll simply say that the advertisement seemed like it was for the girl in the picture and not her saree.

I think its easy for any one who drives on the road to get distracted looking at the picture of this well-photographed, super-model, good looking girl. That is besides the point.

There are at least three different posters that supposedly were displaying the exquisite artistic work on the saree and its borders. I could not see the art in the saree.

My question is very simple: If you are advertising for a saree, why don't you think about having the saree draped as beautifully as possible, on a beautiful girl and take pictures that portray the art work in the saree? A well-draped saree will surely make the girl look extremely beautiful. This is a known fact.

I am wondering if the advertisers would take time to think when they shoot disturbing pictures for an ethnic outfit like saree which is supposed to speak Indian tradition. Also makes me wonder if girls lost their sense of 'sensing the woman within' and the 'common sense' in them in the name of 'career' and 'being modern'. Wonder why??!!!!

Sad that we are already lost between our cultural values and westernization! It only pains me to say that its high time we realize that our culture is not demeaning and we should take every effort to safe guard it. It is what gives us an identity in this world. We need to learn that from Spanish, Chinese and Japanese...

What you have written makes sense.... but if any modern day 'so called feminists' read this, they'll brand you under 'old fashioned', 'opposing women's new identity' or even go to the extent of saying 'talibanisation of india'.
Such is the confusion among feminists in India.

it's simple...the girls are being paid to pose that way. They probably have little/no say in the matter

It's the advertisers who are at fault. They always think sex sells...not always the case

Its to attract a boyfriend/ husband..
Imagine 10 yrs down the line that I am married( I cant as of today imagine that), and I decide to bay a saree for her.. I pass by that very road you mention. I am gulled by the looks of the supermodel! I walk into the store out of pure curiosity and end up buying something..Its good business from their point of view!

Sargam - A 1992 Movie Review

This is a malayalam movie directed by Hariharan. Probably everyone in Kerala would have watched this many times. I got a chance to watch this movie yesterday. Brilliant make - a nice mix of psychology and music. I could identify, Vineeth, Renuka, Thilagan, and Nedumudi Venu in the movie. I wouldnt know the rest of the stars but I must say the movie has been done very well and is set in the late seventies or so it seems. Or may be the nineties itself. I would not know such a set up because I grew up in Tamil Nadu. The whole movie has been shot in a bungalow of old times. They call it Kovilagam which seems to mean Temple. I assume that the ancestors of this family had once been very rich and provided for the families working for them and lived a kingly life with great taste towards traditional arts. Andhra mess..... Once quiet, but now a noisy little food joint close to my office caters to the IT folks who crowd in during Noon for lunch. We are a group of friends who frequent this place once or twice a month for sure. We all have different preferences in meal usually. One friend of mine loves peanut powder, another does not have curd, I don't usually take rice, instead ask for extra Rotis, another friend likes to have sugar soon after the usually spicy meal.
